I had a day in London, it was not day of art and food but also a chance to pick up some leather dressing for my boots, now that the weather has become wet I want my boots to keep out the water, the best leather dressing is from Australia, something else great to come out of Australia.
Today I put another display on the window sill outside my bedroom, not that many people will pass it to enjoy it…..I love it that all theese gourds are the same, they are eatable I think, they look more like melons, and are very big, I have more of them still to bring in, I just need to work out what they are and from there I will know if I can eat some of them.
It is great to end the day with all the fruit in from the gourds and pumpkins, I just now need to find enough window sill space to place the fruit on. I still have a barrow load out at the frontdoor, I just wanted to let the last lot dry off before they are moved in. Some of the fruit has been eaten while on the heaps, I think this could be rats, I was sorry to see it. Now the foliage needs to be cleaned up, the compost will then be ready to be used.
After a week of cooking last week I am ready to get on top of things in the vegetable garden and the compost heap is a good start, we have had a frost now, the growth of the pumpkins has stopped the area needs to be cleaned up and any other fruit put in for the winter, the window sills are starting to look great. I have a lot to do up in the vegetable garden, I took the symposium group up there and could not get them away fast enough when I saw just how much needed doing.
I was very happy to try something new with the pumpkin shoots, It was great to have eaten them as a boiled vegetable a few weeks ago, since then I was thinking about other ways to eat them, we have a symposium on so I have a group of people to try my ideas on, the idea I had come up with was a risotto with not only the fruit but also the shoots, I was happy with the results and the group did not seem to mind either.
At this time of the year the idea of coming in after a day in the garden to a good salad does not keep you going but a good bowl of soup seems the right thing to end a day with and pumpkins do make a great soup. On the weekend I roasted pumpkin, carrot and parsnips blended and them, added spices and vegetable stock, what a great soup it made and to have a good heap of pumpkins makes the idea of more soup something to look forward to.
We have another symposium on, today is the first day, it is always good to see friends who come over to spend a week learning, they always get something out of it and I enjoy the cooking and the gifts, today I got a cup and saucer made by Royal Winton, it looks great with the coffee pot that Linda gave me last time she was here, thank you again Linda.
