We went and looked at an office of a friend of Thomas’s, they have a roof top space which was interesting but nextdoor was more interesting, the had a theatre of strawberries, I am sure that it is something that Tom Coward would love to do next summer. They also had other vegetables in pots around the edge.
It does seem the more you learn the more you want to learn, I am feeling this about Gaudi, he is someone who I know very little about but with the help of Thomas as guide around Barcelona this could change. We have had a day of looking at his works, Thomas dropped us off at Guell Palace, I found it a great place for inspiration and to learn that Gaudi had taken inspiration from plant structure.
It is always a good start to a holiday when I find the marzipan vegetables in the first few hours, we went to a market and there they where, waiting for me. The market had some very good looking fruit and vegetables, I just hoped they had not been grown under the same flight path that I had looked down on from my flight in to Barcelona.
I was at Gravetye today, always a great place to visit and see what Tom and the team are up to, I always get a new idea about what I could do better and also leave with a treat of some kind. I was there to have lunch and go to a talk, both where perfect, Tom was the perfect host. The garden still has so much interest, worth a visit.
It is great to look back after going up and down a ladder, moving it along as you go to see that you have given order to a rough hedge. It does help to make the whole area look more ordered, it also makes me see that we need to try and get some edging sorted. This is the time of the year to look at this kind of thing, we have time before the digging startes.
The Gourds and Pumpins really do give the vegetable garden at this time of the year a great sense of fun, I do spend a little too much time looking at them. Today I asked Thomas and Conifer to stand in them to give a sense of scale, Thomas is little over six foot and Conifer, well short and long. The plants are still growing and the bees still enjoying the flowers, the plants can not go on for much longer or they will be gdrowing along the ground on the other side of the hedge
For me my gardening new year starts on the 1st November, this is the date of not only a new month but also when we are closed to the public, with the change in weather I am thinking more about it and have started to read a book about soil that was given to me while I was in the U.S by a very interesting man, I wish I had more time to talk to him about soil, I want to get ours tested to make sure we do not need to add anything to get more out of the crops.
It does seem like the time of the year when things up in the vegetable garden area need to be cut, the long glass was cut and now I have started to clean up the rough hedge, today was a day for going through the hedge cutting out the black berries before I go through with the hedge cutter, it is going to look smart up there. Conifer loved jumping the grass rows today, it made me laugh so much to watch, those two dogs do bring a lot of joy to my life.
We have really had a change in the season down in this part of the country, Sunday was late summer and Monday was autumn, it is not a lot colder but it has not stopped raining for long since Monday, I know that the cold is not too far away so we got on with a much needed job, a clean up of the kitchen yard, part of this has been to move the Pelargonium’s into Mrs Nextdoors glasshouse for the winter. I do have a love for them and will take cuttings in the next few weeks.
